Peter Bowen, Jan Vink Portrait, 2000s, Large Oil on Canvas

A work by Peter Bowen is a must have of any current Collector of art. Bowen is a self-taught figurative artist who took up painting at 57 after a life of Technical work. He works by starting from a basis of representation, he creeps up on the image from off-centre, trying to avoid explicit representation of details and always open to accidents and unintentionally useful marks. In peters own words ‘A successful picture might invoke the spirit of the subject rather than a physically accurate representation’.

The subject of this piece is Jan Vink, he is the host of Vout o Reenees a private members art club of which Peter was invited and revered as a member of. Vink sat for this particular painting of a series of Tuesdays, of which many were spent having a few drinks to ensure Vink’s personality broke through the paint.
